"Dark Water" -- Thoughts
- So I was worried that this whole episode was going to be about Danny Pink and his ~~epic love story~~ with Clara and I was like, "UGH, KILL ME NOW." Thank God we moved beyond that.
- I CONTINUE TO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DANNY/CLARA RELATIONSHIP. What was with all the Post-It notes in Clara's flat? Are those going to be explained? Why is Clara making such a huge deal out of saying "I love you"? I got the impression they were way past that point? And I know that Clara is all like, "No, no, I ~really mean it~" but I was like, "...I don't get what's happening here." I think that whole conversation was to try to make me feel bad for Clara that Danny died right after her big proclamation but I was like, "Meh, whatever." (Also, there was nothing I liked about "you're the last person I'll ever say those words to." I know why that line's in there, but, like, surely you have other people in the world you love, Clara Oswald. Like your gran. Like the children you plan to have. I bet you say "I love you" to them. I bet Danny is not the last person you say those words to. So whatever, Clara.)
- You know what makes this episode better? The Doctor shows up. Clara is seventy gazillion times better when she is with the Doctor. I seriously *love* Clara and Twelve together SO MUCH. I have heard all the rumors that Jenna Coleman's living and this fills me with despair because the Clara/Twelve relationship is my favorite thing about the show right now. Like, how delighted the Doctor sounds to be getting a call from her! I just love them so much. (Sometimes I wonder if part of the reason I dislike Danny is because I actually kinda-sorta ship Clara and Twelve.)
- I loved Clara's little breakdown with the TARDIS keys. I loved her walked around the TARDIS and knowing where every single one of those keys was. I loved how Clara's so comfortable rummaging through Twelve's things. I JUST LOVE THEM. I don't buy why Clara loves Danny at all, so I wasn't really sad for Clara or anything, but I thought it was an interesting thing to have her do. Because, if you did buy that Clara and Danny were some epic love story, it made sense Clara would react that way. And the Doctor *is* frustrating, with his little rules about when time can and cannot be rewritten that are comprehensible to no one but the Doctor. I liked Clara calling him on that. And then the callback to the "Clara, my Clara" thing. Loved that. And then, afterward, when the Doctor's like, "Did you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" OH MY GOD, THESE TWO. OH MY GOD, *DOCTOR*. Probably my favorite thing this Doctor has ever said, because his heart is so deep, this Doctor, that I feel like we never, ever get to see it, and FINALLY there it was, FINALLY. The Doctor with Clara this episode was so my favorite thing. HE DOESN'T CARE AT ALL ABOUT DANNY, BUT HE CARES ABOUT CLARA SO HE'S GOING TO GET DANNY FOR HER. Love love love.
- And it was kind of interesting that the whole Danny Pink storyline meant nothing to me, because when they did this storyline with Rose and her father, I was in floods of tears by the end and I had just met her father this episode. I don't know if that's because Billie Piper is better than Jenna Coleman, because Rose's father is better than Danny Pink, or because of both.
- When Clara was plugged into the TARDIS and the Doctor told her to think about him, I really thought we were going to get this little montage of all their lovely times together that Clara could think about it but we got nothing and so once again I was left thinking, "WHAT IS THE BASIS OF THAT RELATIONSHIP?"
- I. Loved. Seb. The bureaucrat guy in the Underworld. I want him to be around always. He cracked me up. I would like to sign a petition for him to be on the TARDIS. Really, I loved every secondary character this season *except* for Danny. It's so frustrating!
- The Underworld looks like a pretty cool place, frankly.
- "Okay, bit strange." "Very. Why the scrolling and the voice?" Ha!
- Did we ever find out what the 3 W's are?
- Why does the Doctor get all stuttery as soon as Missy shows up? Does he, like, sense it?
- OH MY GOD THE MISSY KISS. HAHAHAHA CANON MASTER/DOCTOR KISS. LEAVING OFF WITH THOSE KISSES TO THE TIP OF HIS NOSE OH MY GOD. I LOVE IT. And the look on Clara's face. Seriously, I *adore* Clara and Twelve. "You're very...realistic." "Tongues?" "Shut up."
- "Who maintains your heart?" "My heart is maintained by the doctor." "Doctor who?" "Dr. Chang!" OH MY GOD THIS MASTER I LOVE THIS MASTER. See, this episode got so great as soon as we kind of moved away from focusing on the ~~epic love story.~~
- "You have iPads in the afterlife." "iPads. We have Steve Jobs."
- I love Seb's baby-in-wombs analogy. "This isn't really an afterlife. It's just more life than you were expecting."
- Dark water is a very, very cool concept. But if you can only see organic matter in dark water, then what are the chairs in the tombs made out of?
- Ha! The swimming pool joke. :-)
- "Why is there all this swearing?" "Oh, I've got a lot of internalized anger." lololololol - I didn't actually think that they would go there and I love that they did.
- "He believed it was a telepathic communication from the dead." "Why? Was he an idiot?" Hahahahaha! "Can you just hurry up, please, or I'll hit you with my shoe?" The Doctor sometimes speaks for all of us.
- If they're scanning Clara telepathically to imitate Danny, then how could Clara ever ask something they wouldn't already know the answer to, because Clara would have to think the answer and they could telepathically read it and feed it back, no?
- The whole time Clara was like, "Tell me something only Danny would know," I was like, "DANNY. SHE DOESN'T KNOW IT'S YOU BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T MENTIONED THE ARMY YET. JUST HURRY UP AND MENTION THE ARMY LIKE YOU USUALLY DO. SHE IS NOT USED TO HEARING SO MANY SENTENCES FROM YOU THAT DON'T CONTAIN THE WORD 'ARMY.'"
- Really, though, with that whole thing, why doesn't Danny just say the last thing Clara was saying to him when he died? Who else would have known that?
- The first time I liked Danny since basically his first episode was when he let Clara go.
- I liked that the Mistress pretended to be a droid. I really, really liked the Mistress, actually. Her "I'm always going to keep it, always," to Dr. Chang amused me. It's really interesting, she's like...the Master distilled through Scarlett O'Hara or something. "Two hearts." / "And both of them yours." "I should shoot you in a jealous rage." "I presume you have stairs." / "Well, I'm not a Dalek." I just really, really liked her. I am ready for this.
- And the Master shows up and the Doctor really does turn into THE DOCTOR, running around trying to save everyone. I have, all season, been really missing the Doctor seeming Doctor-y, but it's like he suddenly remembered who he was and clicked back into action.
