Mini!Ten was very excited to go to Scotland, even if it does have a few sad memories for him. Whenever he got a bit melancholic, I distracted him by saying "Och! Aye! I've been oot and aboot!" And then he rolled his eyes and snapped out of it. Plus, mini!Ten didn't have much time for regrets because he was besieged by the new friend I bought for him: Henry the Gnome. Henry the Gnome is a jolly fellow, but mini!Ten had no patience for him. Thus why he is glowering in all of the pictures.

 I woke around 5 a.m. to a brilliant sunrise--

The next morning, we went down to breakfast as usual, our usual breakfasts:

[profile] bouncy_castle79 of scrambled egg, sausage, toast, and scone, me of fried egg, toast, and grilled tomato. This was the only day when our other guests spoke to us, which I gather is what is really supposed to happen in b&bs. All the other guests seemed to think Rick Steves was a genius, whereas we had decided he was made of epic fail. (Also, they knew immediately [profile] bouncy_castle79 and I had been college roommates.)

That morning we got up and steeled ourselves for the drive to Glasgow. I sat tense for the entire drive, continuously checking to make sure I thought there was enough room on my side of the car. This did not help my neck. I had very wisely taken Dramamine that morning, which did help my carsickness.

I woke up around 5 a.m., because I am insane. What is mostly disconcerting is that it was just as bright in the room at 5 a.m. as it was at 9 p.m.--which is to say: bright. I considered for a little while whether I could see the sun rise, then decided: (1) the sun appeared to have already risen; and (2) you can't actually see the sun in Scotland. [profile] bouncy_castle79pointed out that we had no idea whih direction the room faced, as we were never able to track the path of the sun.

The weird thing is that it is just as bright in Scotland at 8 at night as it is as 8 in the morning. I was all thrown off to awake and find it looked exactly the same in the room as it had when I'd fallen asleep.

Do not pack when you are sick. This is the primary lesson learned from this trip. Not that it could be helped. Who would have predicted that I'd abruptly come down with a vicious 24-hour bug the night before we were supposed to leave? Well, I suppose I could have predicted it, my luck and my immune system being what they are, but I didn't predict it, so that I was nauseous to a fault when I packed. This meant that I packed haphazardly but it also meant that I was suddenly terrified of being too warm. This is a fear I only have when I am nauseous, the only thing in the world I can think of worse than being nauseous would be being hot and nauseous. So yes, I packed three-quarter sleeve shirts, and sneakers, and a couple of sweatshirts but I was not at all prepared for the shock that 60 degrees feels like when you've gotten used to 90. I had a tank top and flip-flops on from Boston: these were unaccpetable in Edinburgh.
