Day 16 – Your Favourite Who-Related FanFic

"Non-Linear Love Story" by rallalon . If you have never read this story, go and read it immediately. It became my favorite the instant I finished reading it, years ago now, and it has remained my favorite, through all the fic I've read since. There is much to rave about in this fic--anyone who's read rallalon knows she is brilliant at external dialogue and internal monologue, at characters who come alive and interact in a way that thoroughly submerges the reader into the set-up of the plot. I particularly love the timey-wimeyness of the plot of this fic, it seems appropriate to me that the Doctor and Rose's love story should be so thoroughly non-linear. But why is this my favorite fic ever? I think, in the end, it's because the Doctor and Rose in this fic are different from most of the othere Doctor/Roses I've read. In most fics, the Doctor who falls in love with Rose is a Doctor damaged by the Time War, and there is a way that Rose becomes wrapped up with him being lonelier than he's ever been in his life, so that it's possible to believe that Rose would not be half so appealing to him if the Time War had never happened, even if that is never explicitly said. But "Non-Linear Love Story" puts the Doctor first meeting Rose when he was Eight, and loving her even then, and I love what that says about their relationship: Its root is not any outside circumstance, its root is just the two of them, matching, beautifully.
