I Hate Fox
Aug. 12th, 2007 08:50 amI very seldom watch baseball on Fox, being blessed with NESN as I am. The great positive of NESN is that they are not cursed with the stupidity of Fox executives, whose sole criteria for hiring baseball announcers is that they be idiots. So I get Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo, who are unfailingly entertaining.
(Caitlin is coughing up a storm behind me right now. I feel a bit like Mrs. Bennet. Has she no respect for my nerves?)
But, yesterday, the Red Sox game was on Fox. I haven't been watching Red Sox games on weekends, due to the fact that we've been having consistently gorgeous weather and I am usually outside, but yesterday we had the game on, and if the Fox announcers--EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM--are not the largest collection of idiot people ever assembled in one place, then I will eat my hat. First there was Jeanne Zalaska or Zalasko or whateve her name is saying that we need to stop being hypocritical and criticizing Barry Bonds for taking steroids (ALLEGEDLY, as they are always careful to point out) if we are also going to kill people to try to catch the Bonds home run ball. Huh? I don't think that anybody killed anybody to get the Bonds home run ball, first of all. Second of all, what is she *talking* about? I wasn't at the game to catch the home run ball. But does that mean that I am not allowed to complain about Bonds and the integrity of the game, because Jeanne thinks that I *might* have attacked someone to get the home run ball? I remembered, while listening to her, how, one of the first questions after champagne erupted around the Red Sox clubhouse to celebrate the first world championship in 86 years, was what we would do next season, and the way Theo Epstein stared at her in disgust and said, "Uh, I don't think that's appropriate to ask right now, as WE JUST WON THE WORLD SERIES." And now, three years later, I am still putting up with that idiot.
And then they were complaining because Toronto threw at A-Rod for yelling "HA" at their third-baseman during one of his latest demonstrations of how pure class he is, and thank God Roger Clemens came back and protected his players by throwing at somebody on Toronto in retaliation. Why is it only ever okay for Roger Clemens and the Yankees to throw at people? Why is it totally fine for A-Rod to do whatever he wants? Fox was all like, "All this just because he said 'ha' to the third baseman? ALLEGEDLY?" Gah. I *hate* them. They're already making me dread the postseason.
The thing is, if bloody Jeanne Zalaska can be a baseball commentator, then there is no excuse for the fact that I am not one.
