Getting to Know You Meme!
Jun. 21st, 2012 09:04 amSince there have been a few new friends out there (thanks for the friending! Don't be offended that I don't friend back, it's a flat policy on this LJ, it doesn't mean I don't love all of you!), I thought I'd steal this introduction-type meme from
jessicaqueen.
About me: I am a woman, at an age when I consider myself 25, but it turns out I'm several years beyond 25 and I don't really understand how that happened. I used to be a lawyer, but I hated it pretty much more than I've hated anything else in my life, so I made a huge career transition last year and am now a law professor. I am much happier, and, as a result, a much more productive writer. I have a family I consider hilarious, and friends who are even funnier. My favorite city in the world is Boston, and I'm lucky enough that I get to spend lots of time there (here?). I grew up in Rhode Island, which means I very much think like a New Englander. Seriously, all the stereotypes. I literally have no idea about any geography west of Pennsylvania and south of Virginia. And Rhode Island is tiny and everything you might need in life can be reached in twenty minutes, which means that I have a persistent belief that if it takes an hour to get somewhere, you'd better be staying overnight before you come back. I have a literary agent. She is trying to sell my YA fantasy novel. If you are a publisher who would like to buy it, please PM me.
In real life, my favorite thing to do is: ...Writing. Is it terrible to say that? Seriously, there is little I love more than a day with zero commitments, when all that is required of me is that I write. Of course, I don't write all the time. I also love to sit around watching episodes of "House Hunters." Wow. I sound like the world's most boring person, don't I? I like going to Red Sox games! How's that?
I use my LJ mainly for: Posting my fics, and babbling about my life. Oh, sometimes I review shows I'm watching! Basically, the only reviews I've put up here so far have been Sherlock and DW. Which makes sense.
My other accounts are: I don't have a Dreamwidth account because I'm strange. I am on AO3 these days, as earlgreytea68, because the Sherlock fandom is so heavily into it. Only the Sherlock stuff is on there really. The DW stuff stays primarily archived right here on this journal. I also have a tumblr (also earlgreytea68) and a Twitter (also earlgreytea68).
My fandom 'contribution' (such as it is lol): Fic.
My main fandoms are: I really only have two: Sherlock and Doctor Who. I'm not much of a serial fandom person. I might every once in a while click on a fic for a show I like (or a book - I recently tumbled into a "Good Omens" rabbit hole), but I don't ever really consider those "fandoms." I guess it's not a fandom to me unless I'm writing in it.
It might surprise you that: I was an original fic writer long before I tried fanfic, and I didn't think I would ever write fanfic, or have any ideas about fanfics to write. Oh, how wrong I was...
Please don't judge me because: there are certain things I just won't write. I'm not one of those adventurous writers, really. I like my comfort zone, and I'll venture outside of it, but only very slowly and on my own time.
I get fairly animated about: Works of fiction that have unhappy endings. Not that I think all fiction should have a happy ending, just that all fiction I read should have a happy ending. So I guess maybe what I truly get "animated" about are works of fiction that have happy endings. Those are guaranteed to make me more animated in a happy sense. SPOILERS: My fics have happy endings.
Things I look for in an FLister: Niceness. :-)

Date: 2012-06-21 01:44 pm (UTC)You're not kidding. The Sherlock fans seem to have really made AO3 their home, as far as I can tell. The one Sherlock fic (other than that one crossover drabble) that I've written was more popular there than all but the most epic and mainstream of my Harry Potter fics, even though Harry Potter is a way more massive fandom overall than Sherlock (or anything else in existence, for that matter). And whenever I see other authors' Sherlock fics pop up on AO3 there seems to be a similarly massive response.

No. :) You sound honest, and that makes you interesting.

I sort of chuckled at this, thinking of intermittent Scotch-related angst, but it's true.

Date: 2012-06-27 12:28 am (UTC)About me: I am also a woman and I have reached an age at which referring to the man I have lived with for ten years outside of matrimony as 'my boyfriend' seems absurd. I have therefore dubbed him my Kurt Russell - KR for short - because that is the most universal reference I have so far encountered for what we do, though so far we haven't walked any red carpets together which is honestly just a touch disappointing. I am a writer - not professional as of the moment, though if I ever manage to finish something which I alone own and which is long enough to make an actual book I will very definitely attempt to sell it - but being a writer is different than being a professional writer, obviously. This, my being a writer, is relatively new knowledge for me and I'm still getting used to it.
In real life my favorite thing to do is: Sorry, cannot narrow this down any more...walking, reading, writing, taking pictures, and reading on LJ - reading on LJ is distinct from reading not done on a computer screen. I do not yet own an ereader and am holding out for as long as I possibly can on this point.
I use my LJ mainly for: At the moment, I am about a third of the way through writing a Sherlock fic which has grown beyond all proportion of what it should have done, and my friends list is helping me write it. I do try to give them a bit of a break with picture posts and such, but this fic has eaten my brain so sometimes this is difficult.
My other accounts are: I'm not really out there very much. I'm putting lemons into play as hunt.the.lemon.livejournal.com but that's pretty much it. I don't do DW or Tumblr or Facebook or anything like that.
My fandom contribution: Fic so far. I'm useless as an artist.
My main fandoms are: Sherlock has eaten my brain and Cabin Pressure is Brilliant!
It might surprise you that: I implied this was going to be short...
Please don't judge me because: I don't think I will ever write J/S as a couple. I read J/S happily, but I just don't need them to be in a romantic or sexual relationship to write about them.
I get fairly animated about: A section of fic that I wrote yesterday just had me completely over the moon, so I'm going to have to say simply - writing.
Things I look for in an FLister: I'll agree on niceness 100% and add that I really want to hear what people are thinking. I try to keep up with my friends' posts and I really do appreciate anyone who does the same. I'm putting stuff out there and it's always nice to hear that someone is listening.

Date: 2012-06-30 02:06 am (UTC)I, too, am resisting buying an ereader for as long as possible.
Oooh, having your f-list help you write your fic! That sounds so fun! Putting lemons into play! That also sounds fun! Isn't Cabin Pressure just the best?
I didn't think I'd ever write J/S as a couple, either. Just like I didn't intend to write Mystrade. I'm constantly surprised by where I end up. But, having started from your POV, I totally get it.

Date: 2012-06-30 02:21 am (UTC)Yes, I love Cabin Pressure. My introduction to it was actually through my f-list fic, someone wanted Martin added into the mix so I had to familiarize myself, and I found it completely charming and wonderfully funny.
I'm intrigued in the extreme by your Mystrade. I think well done Mystrade would prove lovely, and I'm guessing yours is very, very well done. I haven't had a chance to start the Scotch series yet, but it is high on the list!
I'm perfectly happy with J/S slashing or not. There are a lot of great writers in Sherlock fandom - a tribute to the quality of the source material I believe - and most of the stories I run across really use them well in either situation. I'm pretty fascinated at the broad spectrum of Sherlock stories - people are taking the characters and they'll really just plop them down anywhere. It totally works, too, so that's brilliant.
