I Love October!
Oct. 3rd, 2007 08:25 pmOctober is such a great month. First, there's Halloween to look forward to. I love Halloween. It's an entire holiday built around chocolate! What is not to love?
And you get this great, crisp, clear weather, when the air is so nice to breathe and you can cuddle into sweatshirts and drink hot beverages of your choice (my mother makes witches' brew this time of year, another thing to look forward to).

And, best of all, there is October baseball. How spectacular is October baseball? The genius of the timing of the baseball season cannot be praised too greatly. Spring training bursts upon you in the middle of winter, a hint of summer to keep you going. The season breaks forth anew at the same time the trees develop new leaves, and everything is bright and shiny and hopeful. It slogs its way through the summer, getting heavier and harder as the humidity increases, until the teams really start clasing at the same time that thunderstorms become more prevalent. And then, in October, as the summer says good-bye, baseball has its last hurrah. And it just feels so different, baseball played in October. It's ingeniously positioned so that it's played just as the year dips into that sharp coolness, so that one associates baseball in this weather with the postseason. It's really excellent.
Who I'm Rooting For:
Red Sox - Angels: Well. Red Sox.
Yankees - Indians: Well. Indians.
Rockies - Phillies: I'm rooting for Colorado here. I actually really like the Phillies--Ryan Howard and such--but I'm so astonished at the idea that the Rockies made the postseason that I figure I have to root for them.
Diamonbacks - Cubs: Cubs. I feel they are the last of the tortured fandoms remaining (save Saints football fans, but that's the wrong sport). And, unlike White Sox fans, who were so blase about their victory, I'm confident Cubs fans would approach a bit of the way we felt.
