Top 5 Brem Moments
Aug. 8th, 2009 07:39 pmIn response to this meme,
lorelaisquared asked for my top 5 Brem moments. These were ridiculously hard to do, but I'll go with these five. And an honorable mention, because, yeah. I will say I have a fic in reserve that has one of my all-time favorite Brem moments in it... (YES, I AM STILL A TEASE.)
1. The Doctor realizing how happy baby Brem is in Chapter 6 of "Chaos Theory." This was the moment when the fic tipped from a diversion to a 'verse, and it was all down to the Doctor (and me) falling in love with a little baby named Brem.
2. Brem and the Doctor's conversation over Christmas in "College." Brem totally and utterly surprised me with how angry he was with his father in "College," and a lot of that was me, but a lot of that was also him. I didn't realize, until the moment I was halfway through writing "College," how much "Chaos Theory" left Brem's story unfinished, and how much Brem needed "College."
3. Brem telling the Doctor he's not the last Time Lord, he's the first Time Lord, in "Chaos Theory." I still think this is a gorgeous moment between the two of them. I feel like this was the first time the Doctor truly grasped how much he could learn from Brem, and how much having Brem around would really improve the Doctor's life. I think Brem, in this moment, becomes more than his son, becomes beloved by the Doctor for more than just the family relationship between them. All of the Doctor's kids change him, in big ways and small, but these words of wisdom out of Brem are, I think, the first time the Doctor truly recognized this. Which leads to...
4. The Doctor thanking Brem at the end of "College." It's actually a minor point, almost lost in the midst of the Doctor gifting Brem with his TARDIS, but I *adore* the fact that the Doctor says, "Thank you," to Brem, when Brem hugs him. I just think the Doctor is thinking, at that moment, of all the ways his life is better because Rose accidentally got pregnant with this child. Brem is a turning point as big as the Time War for the Doctor, in his own way.
5. Brem getting drunk in "It Never Gets Dull." Actually, just Brem the wedding planner in "It Never Gets Dull," because I also love how adorably excited he is about his father's stag night. But that lovely little moment when Ten carries Brem to bed and a drunken Brem asks his father if it was a good stag night (and also if humans always feel so terrible) breaks my heart. Brem is always so concerned with making sure the people he loves are happy. Everyone needs a Brem in their family.
HONORABLE MENTION: Brem's letter to Santa in "The Day Before Christmas." I feel like this list was heavy on Doctor/Brem moments, and this was one of my favorite Rose/Brem ones, Rose promising her little boy that she won't vanish if he asks Santa for some lock-picking tools.

Date: 2009-08-09 04:37 am (UTC)I love the other moments you chose too. Other huge Brem moments for me include:
Brem comforting his dad after Rose is lost; Brem shielding Athena from the Family of Blood (including covering her in perfume!), Brem painting Sarah Jane's walls; and Brem listening to Juanes while he saves his parents and keeps the world from ending.
Really, every Brem moment is memorable. I can list dozens of others that I just love.
These Chaosverse kids are in the very top section of my list of all-time favorite fictional characters. I just love them, and I can never thank you enough for writing them for us.

Date: 2009-08-09 05:45 pm (UTC)I didn't even think of little Brem crawling onto the Doctor's lap in comfort when Rose disappeared. That *is* a great moment. And my list is lacking in those protective big brother moments that makes Brem so awesome. Really, as you say, we could all just go on and on.
I'm so glad you love them so much.
