On the one hand, they live in a city and don’t even own a car.

On the other hand, he and Eames have opinions on Lucky knowing survival skills and driving is definitely one of them.

“We ought to teach her how to drive in dreams,” Eames suggests. “That would be the best way to learn. We can really go full throttle.”

Arthur isn’t so sure. “I don’t want her to think dream driving is like waking driving. She’ll develop bad habits.”

“Not at all! I really learned to drive in dreams, you know.”

“That explains a lot,” Arthur murmurs.

Sherlock had never really considered getting a tattoo before. It wasn’t that he had anything against them per se, just that he had never encountered anything he wanted permanently on his skin. He saw people covered in tattoos and wondered at how many things they wished unfailingly to see every single day. It seemed absurd to him. Sherlock, in those days, couldn’t imagine ever wanting to see anything every single day. Even a good murder would get boring.

But these days, looking at John and Oliver, Sherlock understands tattoos. There are things he wants to see every day, unfailingly, permanently.

Matt has never made a gingerbread house before, because when would that have happened in his life? He buys the kit on a whim and tells Patrick, “I thought Adam would like it!”

Patrick says indulgently, “Sure,” but doesn’t seem as enthusiastic as Matt would have thought.

Six hours later when the house keeps collapsing on them and Adam has lost interest, Matt gets it. “So gingerbread houses don’t work,” he concludes, disappointed. He’d had grand hopes. But he cheers himself up. “But it does suit this falling-down house of yours.”

“Maybe I’ll try a gumdrop roof next,” Patrick proposes.

Kylie’s day: a disagreement over a piece of charcoal in art class; a geometry test she was sure she failed; something about lunch tables that Matt couldn’t follow even though Kylie explained it three times. Then Patrick ordered pizza for dinner, forgetting Kylie couldn’t have pizza from the local place because she’d heard someone who worked there was friends with a school jerk, so she was boycotting.

“Cheer up,” Matt remarked that night. “You had them so close together in age, eventually all of them are going to be in high school at the same time.”

Patrick scowled at him.

“I believe,” Eames proclaims, “that the most challenging people to design for are…” Eames pauses.

Arthur glances up from the comps he’s looking at, eyebrows raised.

“Dramatic pause,” Eames explains.

Arthur rolls his eyes.

“Children!” Eames announces.

“Children,” Arthur repeats flatly. “You find children hard to design for?”

“Absolutely. Why do you sound dubious, darling?”

“Because you’re basically an overgrown child yourself. We live in a house with rivers in the hallways, and you wanted a chocolate garden like Willy Wonka. You design instinctively for children.”

Eames considers. “I will take that as a compliment.”

Arthur admits it basically is.

“This is why life in southern California is preferable,” sniffed Matt disdainfully.

“Southern California has earthquakes,” said Miranda.

“Not all the time.”

“And fires,” said Hailey.

Matt paused, then allowed, “Yeah, okay, pretty much all the time.”

“Whereas here we have snow at Christmas time,” said Patrick. “A hush over the streets, lights twinkling through snowflakes, hat hair and red noses and fingers warmed by the fire.”

“See, you’re trying to make it sound romantic to distract me from all of the shoveling.”

“Also,” said Patrick, “we’re rich: I pay someone to do that.”

“Snow just got better,” said Matt.
